Random thoughts to finish out the year
Best Song
I’m not sure I purposefully listened to anything that was released this year so I’ll skip this one…
Best Movie
Other than Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas romances (I cannot resist catching at least a few, but am unable to articulate why that might be), the only two movies I saw this year were Asteroid City and Stop Making Sense. So those are my two favorites.
I love the poignancy of Wes Anderson’s work, and the cinematic precision he puts into everything he does. I haven’t seen all his films, but I’ve seen almost all. Favorites include Rushmore, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Asteroid City. Even The French Dispatch had its moments, although when I watched it with one of my bffs and her husband, I was the only one laughing…
And I wrote a whole thing on Stop Making Sense so that’s all I need to say about it here.
Best TV
I am a huge, unapologetic, fanatical Ted Lasso fan. Best TV ever in the history of all TV on any planet anywhere. I usually don’t come out with strong opinions about most things in public places but hot damn, this show is funny, heartwarming, thoughtful, poignant … All the things. Brilliant acting and writing. So lovely in every way. I almost tear up just thinking about it. There are certain things that allow me to safely experience emotions—this is one of those things.
Side note: The Boyfriend complains that there is too much darkness and violence on TV. Then Ted Lasso comes out and he calls it schmaltzy and formulaic. He’s lucky I haven’t moved out yet.

Best Day of the Year
Nothing stands out so let’s just call them all fabulous.
Best Purchase
This will be remembered as the winter I discovered fleece-lined joggers.
Things to do This Week
Decide whether or not to stay on Substack – because ultimately everything gets politicized, and you have to decide where you come down on things
Pick a 2024 word – which will ultimately be forgotten by the second week of January but it feels like a good thing to do
Buy pencils and a sketchbook so I can be more artsy next year
Finish knitting 2 Xmas gifts that are obviously going to be very late
Psych myself up for actually reading the New Yorker in 2024
Finish my “Marketing Plan” for my next book, The Big Cheese, which consists of telling Instagram I’ve written a book and then crossing my fingers
Things to do Next Year
Publish at least two books
If I stay on Substack, add a 100-word story to each post
Eat less sugar
Continue my 200-day Wordle streak
Go with the flow, since Flow is my word for 2024.
Happy New Year – may 2024 bring you much joy and many blessings.
Watch all the way to the end for an endorsement of my fleece-lined joggers:
Sounds like a decent 2023.
Substack seems to be growing really fast. I only follow three, you, and a high school friend who is a wine expert, and a crazy oil and gas guy who promised a balanced look at renewable energy but spends all his time trashing renewables (I'm about to drop his sorry little ass.)
Oh, the wife and I love Ted Lasso and have watched it through a couple times and are still in mourning.
I love your 2024 word so keep it. I don't have any words except maybe Dallas Cowboys Superbowl Champions. I need to express that in one word.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2024.
Oh I hope you'll stay - but will follow if you go to another platform👍FLOW sounds like a good word for 2024 - mine might be YES, I haven't decided... ;)
