Last Wednesday, a little over 24 hours after leaving my house in Oklahoma, I made it to the home of my aunt in Leipzig. I know there are a lot of savvy world travelers out there, but to me, this feels like a real accomplishment. As I predicted, the anticipation was worse than the actual event. The day had a bit of a rough start, and I ran into a few hiccups along the way, but it all worked out, just as everyone but me had predicted.
The day before I left, Lufthansa informed me they canceled my flight from Frankfurt to Leipzig, and as an apology gave me a second-class Deutsche Bahn rail ticket. So I ended up on a five-hour train journey after my overnight flight From Dallas to Frankfurt. It was interesting to see the countryside by train … when I could actually keep my eyes open.
Now I’ve been here a week, and it’s been lovely. My family has been so welcoming, and everyone’s been excellent tour guides. Thank goodness everyone speaks very good English (especially my American aunt, lol), and has been accommodating in that way and every other way, really.
I’ve started this post several times, first trying to list all the things I’ve done, then trying to write about what it’s been like to be dropped into another culture, from a neurodivergent standpoint. But the words haven’t quite come together yet. They will, but until then I’ll keep this brief and therefore probably less boring.
Here are a few photos of the last week—if you’d like to see more, you can check out my Instagram profile.
Tschüss,
